An Ancestral Baltic Sauna Ritual for Deep Transformation

For Latvians, pirts is a mystical space, similar in essence to the Temazcal of Mesoamerican traditions — a ceremonial womb where we return to ourselves, enter altered states of consciousness, and experience healing beyond words. It is a humble and human ritual, accessible to all, yet deeply sacred and deserving of respect.

The Latvian pirts is more than a sauna. It is an ancient ritual space — a place of rebirth, healing, and communion with nature. Rooted in Baltic folk tradition, pirts has been practiced for generations by my ancestors — my great-grandparents, grandparents, and my mother, who carries deep knowledge of these rituals.

Although my roots are Baltic, I have found that these healing principles transcend geography. Through the wisdom of the four elements — Fire, Water, Earth, and Air — the pirts ritual can support profound transformation anywhere. I now offer this ancestral practice in Valencia, Spain, bringing elemental healing into the heart of a modern city. This is an invitation to reconnect with nature, with your body, and with the intelligence that already knows how to heal.

Fire

Fire warms, activates, and transforms. In the sauna, heat opens the body, softens resistance, and prepares us for release. Fire helps burn away what no longer serves — physically, emotionally, and energetically.

Water

Water carries emotion. Through steam, washing, and cold immersion, we work with emotional release, purification of the heart, and renewal. Water teaches surrender and flow.

Air

Steam, breath, voice, and sacred songs work with the air element. Air clears the mental space, bringing clarity and opening access to intuition and inner knowing.

Earth

Plants, herbs, salt, and whisks come from the Earth. They ground, nourish, protect, and restore the nervous system. Each plant carries both physiological benefits and energetic intelligence.

The Ritual Journey

Before We Meet

The ritual begins days before our physical meeting. I connect intuitively with your energy, prepare herbal blends, create the salt scrub, and mark it with Baltic sacred symbols and protective words specifically for you.

Intention Setting

We begin by setting intention and asking the natural forces and supportive spirits to guide the process with clarity and ease.

First Heating

We enter the sauna to gently warm the body. I work with herbal steam, sacred plants, and traditional pirts songs to open the space and invite the elements.

Cleansing

A salt and herbal blend—prepared intuitively from Mediterranean and Latvian plants—is applied to the body to cleanse on physical, emotional, and energetic levels. Through heat, massage, breath, voice, and song, we support the release of what is ready to be let go.

Herbal Whisk Massage

We return to the sauna for whisking using oak, linden, birch, juniper, and other plants.
Whisking:

  • Improves circulation and lymphatic flow

  • Relaxes muscles and joints

  • Stimulates the nervous system

  • Works energetically to release stagnation and restore vitality

Plants are invited as allies through song, symbols, and touch.

Depending on season and intuition, I work with:

Baltic Plants

  • Oak — strength, protection, masculine vitality

  • Linden — softness, heart healing, feminine energy

  • Birch — cleansing, renewal, emotional release

  • Juniper — protection, purification, grounding

  • Mugwort & Wormwood — intuition, vision, ancestral connection

Mediterranean Plants

  • Lavender — calming, nervous system balance

  • Rosemary — clarity, circulation, mental focus

  • Sage (Salvia) — purification, wisdom

  • Eucalyptus — breath, release, freshness

All plants are gentle and used with care. Allergies are always discussed in advance.

Cold-Water Immersion

The ritual culminates in cold water. Physically, it resets the nervous system and boosts circulation. Energetically, it seals the work and often brings the deepest altered state — clarity, presence, and rebirth.

Integration & Rest

Afterwards, you rest in silence. When ready, we gently integrate the experience through conversation, grounding, and reflection.

Practical Information

What to Bring

  • Swimsuit

  • Towel

Language

Words are secondary in ritual work. I sing in my native language and guide intuitively. I speak English fluently and understand Spanish and Russian. Even without shared language, the ritual communicates beyond words.

An Invitation

The beauty of pirts is that it asks you to choose no belief, no doctrine, no path.
It simply offers what Mother Earth has always offered — warmth, water, plants, breath, and unconditional support.

This is a return to the body.
A return to nature.
A return to yourself.
